  1. PUBLISHER-IN-RESIDENCE: Erizo
    Summer-Fall 2019

    Wendy's Subway is pleased to announce Erizo as Publisher-in-Residence in Summer and Fall 2019. Over the course of its residency, Erizo will begin developing a program for commissioning collaborations between artists and poets working in various mediums, languages, countries, and traditions. Please join Erizo and Wendy’s Subway for a series of public programs exploring the history of artist-poet collaborations, the issues inherent to multimedia collaborations, and the themes being taken up by Erizo’s first commissioned collaboration—between choreographer Samantha Blake Goodman and poet Emily Sieu Liebowitz. Samantha and Emily's collaboration will premiere in Fall 2019.

    About Erizo

    Erizo is a bilingual journal of poetry and visual art devoted to enlivening lines of artistic communication across the Americas. Based between Mexico City, New York, and Los Angeles, Erizo works with poets, translators, and visual artists from across the continent with the goal of making previously unpublished works accessible to English- and Spanish-language audiences. Erizo is edited by siblings Nika Chilewich and Aron Chilewich.

    About Emily Sieu Liebowitz

    Emily Sieu Liebowitz is the author of National Park (Gramma Poetry, 2018), which was longlisted for the Believer book award, and the chapbook In Any Map (The Song Cave, 2015). A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she was an Alberta Kelly Fellow, her writing has appeared in Poetry, The Believer, The Brooklyn Rail, and various other journals and magazines. She lives in Brooklyn, NY and her hometown Hayward, CA, and freelances in writing and arts communications.

    About Samantha Blake Goodman

    Samantha Blake Goodman is an interdisciplinary creative. As a choreographer and founder of  MAPS (Movement Arts Performance Space), she curates unique experiences dedicated to cultivating the contemporary and traditional arts of the Afro-Latinx and Caribbean diaspora in Los Angeles. Her choreographic work has been shown at the Getty Museum, ICA LA, Navel, Trapos Sucios (Mexico City), REDCAT Theater, Fowler Museum, & MOCA’s online screen program. Samantha holds an MFA in Dance from UCLA and studied dance and choreography at the Escola de Dança da FUNCEB in Salvador, Bahia Brazil.

    A Talk by John Yau

    Join Erizo and Wendy's Subway for a talk by poet and critic John Yau on his many collaborations with visual artists, and on the history of artist-poet collaborations more generally.

    John Yau is the author of thirteen books of poetry and four books of fiction. His poetry books include Radiant Silhouette: New & Selected Work 1974-1988 (1989), Borrowed Love Poems (2002), Ing Grish (2005), and Bijoux in the Dark (2018). His work has been translated into French, Portuguese, Chinese, Greek, German, and Romanian. An art critic since 1978, he has published many monographs and books of criticism, including A Thing Among Things: The Art of Jasper Johns (2008), The Wild Children of William Blake (2017), and books on Catherine Murphy (2016), Thomas Nozkowski (2017), Philip Taaffe (2018). Since the late 1980s, he has collaborated with numerous artists, including Bill Barrette, Max Gimblett, Pat Steir, Archie Rand, Tom Burckhardt, Justin Kurland, Chuck Webster, Hanns Schimansky, Squeak Carnwath, Suzanne McClelland, Norbert Prangenberg, and Thomas Nozkowski.
